Vinyl or rubber backed mattress protector

In the bedding section of your favorite department store, you will find a great assortment of mattress pads and mattress protectors. While many mattress protectors are waterproof, not all are designed the same.

Some rubber backed mattress protectors are designed to be washed after every use. This style of protector has a cloth top and a rubber backed bottom. While they do an excellent job of wicking away moisture, they must be washed after every accident.

Another type of mattress protector is a zippered bag made of vinyl that slides over the entire mattress. These vinyl protectors are placed beneath a standard mattress pad and bottom sheet and can be wiped down with a disinfectant after an accident occurs.

Both styles of mattress protectors are available at Walmart and are priced between at $7.99-$11.99 depending on the mattress size.

Incontinence pads

In hospitals, disposal incontinence pads called “chux (sometimes spelled as chucks) offer an additional layer of protection for patients and bed linens. These blue pads are available through medical supply stores or on line and cost $36 for 54 generously sized pads.

A greener alternative to the chux are washable bed pads which are also available through medical supply stores or on line at nursing supply shops such as Nursinghomeapparel.com. Large sized pads cost between $7-12 per pad and are durable enough to last through hundreds of washings.

Rubber backed draw sheets

For patients who are completely bedridden, a special sheet called a “draw sheet” helps caregivers lift and turn a person in bed without hurting either the patient or themselves. These sheets measure around 36″ x 70″ and are placed on the bed sideways. Some types of draw sheets are rubber backed which provides complete protection for both patient, bed linens, and mattress. Rubber-backed flannel draw sheets range from $12-$15 in price, and can be found on-line at medical supply stores.
